Duckpond Bill 23rd Jan 2010

It was a week of mixed results for the club with the A1 reserves and A3’s bolstering their top two positions with good wins and the U14’s in a good position. But the A2’s suffered a disappointing loss and the U16’s will have to bowl well next week to defend their low total.

A1 reserves – The Traveled to Ram Park to take on Truro in a one day match, and after losing the toss were sent into bat The inform Dimi Camilleri went early putting some pressure on as the Rams bowled well early but after weathering the storm Steve Hill and Steve Gallasch started to push the score higher. Hilly was batting solidly with Steve supporting well clearing the fence for the second week in a row, when Steve was dismissed for 17 Hilly paired up with Craig Todd and suddenly all the momentum was with the baggy greens as they punished any loose bowling to the fence putting on 81 runs for the 4th wicket, Hilly finally out for a brilliant 74. Toddy continued and reached 63 before a sharp caught and bowled removed him for 63 with 4 overs remaining. Another sharp catch brought Marty Gallasch to the crease joining Andy Davidson, the pair pushed the teams total to 219 with a 22 run partnership off the last two and a half overs, Andy finished with a well earned 28n/o.
While the score looked good on paper the lads were well aware that Truro Oval is well known as a big total ground and that they couldn’t take anything for granted if they wanted the point. Dimi took an early wicket relishing the chance to take the new ball again but some aggressive stroke play saw the run rate climb before Mick Baumann removed the main offender. Sam Schmidt entered the attack bowling up the hill with the match still very much in the balance and produced one of his best spells for the year taking 2 important wickets for very few runs while Tim Taylors 1/19 at the other end virtually took the game away from Truro. Toddy bowled a tidy 1/1 from 3 overs and Wade Gripton took 2/23 but Truro’s last couple of wickets proved difficult to get as the Rams bottom order gutsed it out trying to find a silver lining to a big defeat. In the end Truro were restricted to 9/134. The “Stockwell Hotel Man of the match was Steve Hill.
A2’s – The A2’s played Gawler Central at Stockwell main oval on the weekend needing to win the match to maintain a top four position. Simon Davies lost the toss again and must be dreading ANZAC day with his currant form with the coin. Gawler elected to bat first on a dusty deck and after an early wicket to Andrew Nash started slowly accumulating runs. The first session could have been a tie with the score on 2/60 after the first 20 largely due to tight bowling by Syd Miller Andrew Nash and Simon Davies. The Baggies look in control in the second session but a late partnership allowed Centrals to post a higher total than had looked likely and in the end they posted 9/168. Simon Davies was the best of the bowlers taking 3/30 while Nashy was solid with 2/25.
A good start was important against the Tigers miserly attack and Sam Rudiger partnering Nathan Koch provided the solid start necessary to set up a win with a 75 run opening stand before Sam was caught for 26. Unfortunately Kochy followed soon after for 41 and the Baggies middle order squandered the start and with 10 overs to play the score was 6/111 with most of the batsmen back in the clubrooms. Sean Schrapel and Tim Rowbottom led a fight back but the lads still needed 11 an over to save the match. The tail went down swinging and the lads were rolled for 156 12 runs short of victory. The “Schiller Vineyards” man of the match was Nathan Koch.
A3’s – The A3’s also played at Stocky on the No.2 oval on Saturday against Freeling. Freeling won the toss and batted first, scoring steadily as the bowlers struggled to remove the opening batsmen. All of the bowlers bowled tightly and the fielding was good preventing the Redlegs from posting a big total, Chris Sims introduction to the attack paid divided as he tweeked his way to 2/28 from his 8 overs while Nigel Koop and Dan Hausler chipped in with a wicket each. The bowlers in the first 20 overs deserve a big mention though because while they didn’t take a wicket Ed Milne Tommy Gerlach and Craig Miller kept Freeling under constant pressure stifling the run rate and helping to restrict Freeling to 4/153.
The Light Pass batsmen were in no mood for a tense run chase and got off to a great start with Gary Sims and Brad Ellbourn scoring at a good rate setting the innings up with a 59 run opening stand with Brad making 20 runs. Gary was the next to go for a well made 48 and while that caused the run rate to fall for a while the middle order held firm lead by Tommy Gerlach who made 29. There were a few nervous moments but an unbroken 34 run partnership between Tim Boehm and Ed Milne got the lads over the line and to their eventual total of 7/178. The “Dimchurch Vineyard” man of the match was Chris Sims.

Till next week,
