Duckpond Bill 30th Jan 2010

It was a great week for the club with all three senior sides that played coming home with important wins with some excellent personal achievements posted as well.

A1 reserves – The 1’s took on South Gawler in an important clash at Stockwell main oval on the weekend, a win would see the lads possibly go a game clear at the top while a loss may have resulted in a drop to third on the ladder.
South won the toss and elected to bat first on a typical Stocky batsman’s deck. South got off to a reasonable start with a decent runrate but the baggie greens bowlers rallied and lead by Dimi Camilleri crashed through South’s middle order. Dimi was bowling at his best taking 3/27 and was backed up well by Tim Taylor, Sam Schmidt and Mick Baumann. The Fielding was brilliant with 2 sharp run outs putting pressure on the batsmen, Andy Davidson was in rare for with the gloves taking 3 catches while Steve Gallasch and Craig Todd were as dangerous as ever in the field. Craig Todd also chipped in with a good spell at the end taking 2/9 and when Wade Gripton took the last wicket midway through his first over the boys in the baggy green had rolled South Gawler for 102.
History is littered with fails attempts to chase low totals so it was still important the batsmen went about their business properly. Dimi went hard early and paid the price but Richard Mattner continued with Steve Hill, the pair took the score to 64 before Richard was caught for 33. For the second week in a row the two Steve’s combined well as Steve Gallasch joined the fray, a 42 run partnership with Steve Hill got the lads past South’s total but ended with Steve Gallasch’s wicket for a well made 32. With the win in hand a couple of wickets fell cheaply including that of Steve Hill who was bowled for a solid 37. Andy Davidson teamed up with Matty Mattner with 13 overs to go and the pair put on a great display scoring an unbeaten 104 run partnership that was entertaining to say the least. Malibu was relishing some time at the crease scoring at a great rate while the inform Davidson continued to pick his battles finishing with another not out (25), Malibu ended up smashing 68n/o including some of the bigger 6’s seen at Stocky in recent times and earning himself the “Stockwell Hotel” man of the match.

A2’s – The Wanderers traveled to South Gawler to take on the bottom side at the Lions Den.
As per usual Simon lost the toss and the opposition chose to bat. Syd Miller bowled well with out luck, as did Andrew Nash who was fighting off injury, but the openers proved difficult to remove as some ordinary fielding and a little luck got the Lions off to a reasonable start. Inaccurate bowling and some below par fielding cost the boys in the baggy green as South’s batsmen seemingly got away with murder but good spells by Syd Miller and Tim Gladigau slowed the scoring to some extend before a final flurry saw South post the imposing total of 7/186 from their 40 overs.
The Light Pass batsmen had a point to prove after a disappointing effort in the previous game and the opening combination of Sam Rudiger and Nathan Koch had no intention of letting it happen again with a top four spot on the line. The pair batted magnificently scoring consistently and routinely pinching extra runs with hard running between wickets. At 20 overs the match was still in the balance with the score at 0/92 but Light Pass had the advantage of a set pair and plenty of firepower to come. Sleepy and Kochy put on 122 runs for the first wicket, the partnership ending when a mix up caused Sleepy to be run out for a great 47. Marty Gallasch joined Kochy and the pair took advantage of some lack luster bowling scoring at 9 runs an over before Marty went after the wrong ball and was caught for 23 but by that time the match was well in Light Passes sights and Kochy was continuing to bat well with Tim Gladigau. That partnership took the team past South’s total and only ended when Kochy was forced to retire hurt with 104 runs to his name. Tim opened up the shoulders punishing any loose bowling to or over the fence and ended up falling just short of his half century with a well made 46 runs. Mick Braunack and Sean Schrapel batted out the last couple of overs and at the end of play the boys in the baggy green had amassed 267 runs for the loss of only 3 wickets. The “Davies Labour Hire” man of the match was Nathan Koch with his maiden century.

A3's - The A3's had the bye.

A4’s – The A4’s played Greenock at Stockwell No.2 oval on Saturday, The “Schlungers” won the toss and Batted first.
After taking and early wicket the Baggy Greens were held at bay by Greenock’s elder statesmen for much of the innings but the run rate was low as all the bowlers bowled tightly and the fielder denied the batsmen scoring opportunity on the open spaces of Stocky No. Mark John took 1/18 and Nigel Koop 1/13 but the best figures belonged to Jeremy Gore who took two important wickets stopping the “Schlungers” from hitting out at the end, he finished with figures of 2/10 from 4 overs. In the end the lads restricted Greenock to 4/133.
The chase did not start well with three early wickets putting pressure on the batsmen as one of the"Schlunger” bowlers wreaked havoc early. Jeremy Gore worked hard and nearly saw that bowler off but when he fell for 13 things were looking grim with the score on 4/25. Tommy Gerlach and Bradley Hunter joined forces to turn the match around with 40 run partnership that gave the lads some hope before Tommy was caught for 29. Bradley remained stubbornly at the crease and partnered Dan Hausler in another 40 run stand that put the match back within the baggy greens grasp. The score was 6/103 when Jimmy Miller replaced Dan at the crease after he was bowled for 13 and batted well with Bradley who seemed in complete control and the pair steered Light Pass to victory with 7 overs to spare. Jimmy was run out for 18 attempting to get Bradley to his half century before the A4 mercy rule was invoked but unfortunately Bradley was left stranded on 49 n/o when stumps were pulled, that innings earned him the “Dimchurch Vineyards” man of the match.
