Duckpond Bill 13th Feb 2010

It was a very successful weekend for the boys in the baggy green with strong wins to the A1’s and A2’s, an amazing escape for the A3’s and a honourable defeat for the A4’s. The Club also hosted the A1 one day final on Sunday between Angaston and Sandy Creek, which proved to be an entertaining match. A huge thank you has to go to Syd Miller who brought up a quality one day deck for the game and to Tim Taylor and Allison who spent the day running a canteen to help raise funds for the club.

A1 reserves – The first XI travelled to Eudunda to play the second week of their two day match against the ERCCer’s. After posting the strong total of 8/343 last week the lads set about defending their score and trying to set up a shot at the maximum points. The inform Simon Camilleri struck in his first over and then again in his fourth to put the home side under pressure and excellent bowling by Tim Taylor and Mick Baumann kept the runs low. Mick claimed the prized scalp of JR Mosey while Simon went along his merry way eventually finishing with the figures of 4/52 from 19 overs. Craig Todd took care of the tail bowling 7 overs 3/15 and the ERCCer’s were bowled out for 118 runs. The lads had a slim chance at claiming an outright but with only 23 over left in the day it was always going to be a big ask. Simon Camo, Wade Gripton, Craig Todd and Richard Mattner claimed a wicket each but at the end of play the ERCCer’s had avoided outright defeat at 4/58. The Stockwell Hotel man of the match with 53 runs and 5 wickets for the game was Simon Camilleri.

A2’s – The Wanderers were in with a great chance of outright victory this week in their fixture against Kapunda. Having secured first innings points last week the lads set about building a lead in order to have a crack at Kapunda’s batsmen again. Skipper Simon Davies had given his batsmen 17 overs to make runs before a declaration and after a steady start the lads got into the swing of it with Andy Davidson and Tim Gladigau pushing the runrate higher. Tim was bowled for 31 and Mick Braunack joined Andy, together they kept the momentum going until Andy was dismissed for a well made 42. Sean Schrapel was run out trying to keep the score ticking and that brought Simon Davies to the crease. Mick and Simon put on 59 runs in the last 6 overs to give the lads a healthy 137 run lead, Mick Braunack was plastering boundaries to all parts of the ground and ended up with 69 runs. Due to unfortunate circumstances Kapunda only had 9 eligible batsmen present on the day and that meant 8 wickets would secure a much needed outright win for the boys in the baggy green. The bowlers had 45 overs to get the job done and Syd Miller was sensational again, backing up his 5 wicket haul from last week with 3/27 off 11 overs putting the team on track from the start. All of the bowlers did well and some tight fielding also helped the cause when keeper Andy Davidson produced a direct hit run out from 30 metres out after chasing down a leg bye to place Kapunda precariously on 4/30. Kapunda showed some grit in the middle order but when Simon Davies dragged down a great caught and bowled to claim the first of his 3 wickets the pressure took it’s toll, Tim Gladigau took an important wicket with his first ball and shortly after the final wicket fell with 12 overs to go giving the lads an outright win. The “Davies Labour Hire” man of the match was Syd Miller with 8/38 for the game.

A3’s – The A3’s played out their match with Sandy Creek at Williamstown on the weekend attempting to defend 196 on the smallish oval. Mark John and Bryce Mathews continued to bowl well but it took some time to add to the 2 wickets that Yonnie had claimed last week. Chris Sims was introduced to the attack and bowl brilliantly taking 2/10 from his 6 overs swinging the momentum back Light Pass and proving once again to be amongst the most improved players in the club this season. The Cockies middle order however had other ideas and a 108 run partnership looked to have ended the lad’s chances of victory but two wickets to Nick Liddel restored some hope as he took out both set batsmen. Defending only 23 runs with 10 overs to play and 5 wickets to take it was going to take a cricket miracle for the boys in the baggy green to escape defeat. It doesn’t seem that miracles often go the way of the baggy green but it certainly did at Williamstown on the weekend when Bryce Mathews was reintroduced to the attack with the game seemingly out of reach. Bryce proceeded to produce three overs of relatively accurate thunder bolts on the hard wicket taking 4/1 in his second spell dismissing Sandy Creek 14 runs short of the baggy greens total effecting and unbelievable comeback and hand Light Pass the win. That effort won him the “KADS” man of the match.

A4’s – The A4’s played Gawler Central at Stockwell No.2 on Saturday. After losing the toss the side was sent out to field. Bradley Boehm and Matt Kleeman both bowled well early and were very unfortunate not to take more early wickets as there seemed to be quite a lot of doubt going the batsman’s way. BB took 2/23 from his 8 and Matt finished with figure of 1/34 but bowled much better than those figures suggest. Wickets did fall but Centrals kept a consistent run rate and despite a great spell by Pup Gerhardy that yielded 3/40 the Tigers posted the defendable total of 7/157. The lads got off to a good start with the bat via Paul Braunack and Pup Gerhardy who put on 37 before Paul was bowled for 20. Both Sam Marks and Chris White had modest partnerships with Pup, keeping the scoreboard ticking over but none of the middle order could go on with their starts. Pup was dismissed for a well made 28 but with overs running out the lads were forced to chance their arms with some daring running between wickets that resulted in some late run outs. Bradley Boehm batted well for 14 but the last few wickets fell cheaply in the search for quick runs and the lads were bowled out 33 runs short of Gawler’s total. The “Dimchurch Vineyards” man of the match was Pup Gerhardy.
