Duckpond Bill 27th Feb 2010

It was a disappointing weekend for the boys in the baggy green with only one team securing a win in the second to last minor round match. The silver lining was that it was the A2’s that scored the win which keeps their finals hopes alive and also that there was some promising individual efforts across the grades this week.

A1 res – The first XI played out the second day of their clash with Greenock at Schlunger Park on Saturday needing 223 for victory. Steve Gallasch and Dick Mattner got the lads off to a solid start with a 59 run partnership, which ended with Dick’s wicket on 32. The batsmen toiled against some disciplined bowling by Greenock and perhaps fell into the same trap that the Schlungers found themselves in last week with a slow run rate placing pressure on the middle lower order. Steve’s wicket fell for a well made 33 making the score 3/77 and on recent form that should have been a good enough start but a middle order collapse saw the boys in the baggy green crash to 7/99. Wade Gripton and Mick Braunack came to the rescue putting on nearly 60 runs before Grippo was dismissed for 38. Mick continued to bat well but ran out of partners ending up stranded on 52 not out when the final wicket fell. Light Pass all out for 195. Important lessons need to be learnt from the loss but equally important is to let the loss go and concentrate on winning every match from here on in. The “Stockwell Hotel” Man of the match was Sam Schmidt with wickets last week.

A2’s – The A2’s restricted Greenock to 121 last week and were confidant of posting a much needed strong win this week. Marty Gallasch and Nathan Koch did well against the new ball early, pushing single around a defensive field but a horror 4 overs saw the lads slump to 4/47, which sent alarm bells ringing in the change rooms. Sean Schrapel was joined by Travis Schiller in the middle and the pair of youngsters proceeded to take control of the innings with a good mix of patience and aggression. Both Batsmen were great and fittingly had identical totals at tea when the skipper decided to declare for 137, both Travis and Sean were on 43not out. In an attempt to garner the maximum point for the day Simon turned back to his inform bowlers who did not disappoint taking 7/59 from 31 overs putting valuable points in the bank. Simon Davies had the best figures claiming 2/7 but it was the quick’s who did the damage, Syd Miller took 1/17 from 8, Andrew Nash finally got a well deserved wicket claiming 1/8 but the highlight was a 6 over spell by Bradley Hunter who obviously wanted to show it wasn’t just the young batsmen who could contribute, Bradley bowled a solid line and length taking 1/9 in a display of in swing bowling that could have had Yonnie’s eyebrows raised. The “Davies Labour Hire” man of the match was jointly awarded to Sean Schrapel and Travis Schiller.

A3’s – The A3’s traveled to Riverton on the weekend with a big score to chase down against the top placed Gilbert Valley outfit. The lads had a crack at the win but a lack lustre start ment they were never really in the hunt. Dan Hausler batted well for 23 and Gary Sims got a start with 18 but most of the lads barely troubled the scorers and the lads were dismissed for 93. Gilbert Valley chose to bat again citing the need for practice before the finals and that gave the baggy greens bowlers a chance to show their grit and at the end of play Gilbert Valley were 4/57 which must give the boys in the baggy green some confidence coming up to the finals. Matt Kleemann took 2/12 while Nigel Koop chipped in with 1/1 and Garry Sims produced a terrific caught and bowled to claim 1/5. The Man of the match was Mark John

A4’s – The A4’s played at Stocky No. 2 and had more than their fair share of problems early with poor communication leading to the lads having no matting early and playing a couple of players short. Still they didn’t give up and didn’t give in and managed to post a fair score of 10/132 against Kapunda. Paul Braunack was the best with the bat playing solidly over the whole innings and finishing on62 not out. It must have been a highlight for Paul to pair up with his son James in the biggest partnership of the innings that was a 47 run stand between the pair of which James made 29. The lads got stuck into Kapunda early with a couple of wickets in the first few overs but unfortunately couldn’t keep the batsmen down and in the end Kapunda passed the lads total with about 9 overs to spare. Pup Gerhardy’s 2/33 and Mitch Laubsch’s 2/41 were the best figures but Adding 1/11 to his stats was enough to win Paul Braunack the “KADS” man of the match.
