It was an interesting week for the boys in the baggy green with some good and bad results for the teams, some strange weather and a couple of remarkable personal efforts. A1 reserves – The first XI travelled to Lyndoch on the weekend determined to bounce back from last week’s loss and give themselves a chance to reclaim top spot. The lads batted first and got the scoreboard ticking immediately but an early wicket forced the run rate down to a more typical pace with Dick Mattner and Steve Hill putting together a solid 62 run partnership before Dick lost his wicket for 32. Andy Davidson came and went bringing together the two Steve’s again as Steve Gallasch joined Hilly at the crease. That partnership lasted until a couple of showers and some wonderful theatrics by the Lyndoch bowlers ended play for the day after 42 overs, leaving the lads 16 overs to bat next week in a reduced overs match. Hilly was great with the bat again finishing the day on 59 not out and Steve Gallasch was on 10 not out. A2’s – The equation was simple for the Wanderers on Saturday, win the game of risk missing the final. With that in mind Skipper Simon Davies decided to back his bowlers who have been great in recent weeks and bowled first after somehow actually winning a toss. His call proved to be correct early with Mick Baumann picking up an early wicket and then affected a brilliant run out but some poor catching allowed Angaston back into the match and a tea they were past the 100 mark four wickets down. After tea the momentum swung back in the baggy greens favour as good spells of bowling by Simon Davies Andrew Nash and in particular Brad Hunter took out Ango’s middle order. The reintroduction of a fired up Mick Baumann to the attack was well timed and Mick proceeded to smash Ango’s tail order eventually taking 5/35 helping to roll the opposition for 175. With 14 overs to play Marty Gallasch and Nathan Koch opened the batting and did well surviving the awkward last session and taking the score to 0/41 at the end of play. A3’s – The 3’s also played Angaston but unfortunately did not fare so well. Angaston batted first and did well scoring at a reasonable rate while the baggy greens bowler battled to get wickets. Grassed catches cost the lads dearly as on of the openers went on to make a ton batting almost the entire innings. Bryce Mathews was the most successful bowler taking 2/35 while Nick Liddel and Chris Sims claimed one wicket each. After a forgettable day for the boys in the baggy green Angaston posted 5/251 putting pressure on the Light Pass batsmen, but the match is far from over and the lads have 65 overs next week to make the runs and plenty of grit and determination in their side. Don’t give up, Don’t give in. A4’s - The 4’s played the ERCCer’s at Stockwell No. 2 on the weekend and batted first. In an interesting move Skipper Pup Gerhardy opened the batting alongside self confessed axeman Ed Milne and the pair proved to be a devastating combination surviving an awkward start going on to pillage the Erccer attack for a 197 run opening stand. Ed was in rare form spanking the ball to all parts of the ground and at drinks the score was 0/79. After the break the batsmen continued the onslaught with Ed posting his maiden century making 117 before he was caught out with a couple of overs to go. Pup was undefeated at the end of play grafting 60 run from the inning in a solid batting display and the lads posted a total of 2/207 from their 40 overs. The Erccer’s were under the pump from the beginning and the need to score quickly resulted in early wicket to Bradley Boehm and Justin Sparks who open the bowling well taking 2 wickets each because Ed and Pup were a bit tired (poor things). The Erccer’s were scoring at the required run rate until after drinks but a key wicket to Sparksy opened the door for Chris White (1/23) and Kyle Hammerling (3/12) to finish of the visitors tail enders and the lads bowled them out for 146 with 10 overs to spare. Remember all subs are over due and must be paid immediately. The Junior Presentations are coming up on the 9th of April and the Senior Presentations will be on the 10th, more information about these events will be coming out over the next few weeks so watch this space for details.
