The weekends cricket was an interesting affair with the juniors getting off to a promising start in their first fixtures for the season and mixed results for the senior sides.
A1’s – The A1’s match against Angaston was affected by the wet weather which rendered the pitch unplayable this week and the game has been shorted to a One Day match next weekend. A2’s – The Wanderers headed for the hills this week to play Angaston at Angaston Oval under gray skies but fortunately the drizzly weather that visited the rest of the valley missed the high country and a full days play was possible. Skipper Simon Davies unusually won the toss and elected to bat first. An early wicket had the crowd a little nervous but Tim Rowbottom and Simon Davies forged a solid partnership forcing many bowling changes as Ango searched for another break through. Tim and Simon alternated between solid defence and punishment of loose deliveries putting on 107 runs for the second wicket, setting up the side for a decent total before Tim was stumped for 45 attempting to push the runrate along. Another wicket followed but Andrew Nash joined Simon and the pair once again had the bowler’s searching for new ideas with a 77 run stand. The score was nearing 200 when Simon was finally dismissed for 78 after a strong innings. With overs in hand a big total did not seem out of the question but sadly Ango hit back with a couple of wickets including that of Nashy for 45, robbing the Baggy Greens of momentum. Tommy Gerlach soldiered on scoring 20 before edging one but the lower order batsmen struggled to put runs on the board. The last wicket pairing of Nigel Koop and Chris Sims got the total to 230 with a couple of overs to play before Koopy lost his wicket leaving Chris on 5 not out. A4’s – The A4’s played Freeling at Stockwell No.2 on Saturday in their first match of the season after being forced to forfeit last week. Freeling batted first and set an imposing runrate early in proceedings despite Matt Kleemann claiming a scalp in the 2nd over. The visitors were scoring at over 6 an over for the first 10 but the lads kept fighting and were rewarded with another wicket this time via Jimmy Braunack who slipped one past the windmill and on to the stumps. Unfortunately this did little to stop the onslaught as Freeling’s top order continued to score at an unlikely pace. Tommy Schwarz was brought into the attack and finally dismissed the other opener, while Tommy still took a bit of stick his final figures, 4/52 from 8, were the best of the day as he removed Freeling’s big hitting top order. Jimmy Braunack took 2/46 once again both wickets were top order bats. Skipper Brad Ellbourn tried a change of tack with the introduction on part timer Andy Davidson to the attack and the scoring momentarily eased with a double wicket maiden, but the last few overs saw the opposition kick away again eventually scoring 9/283 from the allotted overs. Such a big total was nearly an impossible ask for the young A4 line up but as the Kaiser Chiefs put it “If your gonna lose, then lose like a winner”. An early wicket brought Brad Ellbourn and Andy Davidson together and the pair set about building a foundation for the innings. While both batsmen made starts neither could go on with it scoring 15 and 19 respectfully. The young baggie’s fought hard but struggled to hold their wickets and score at the required rate and this saw the innings shift into one of survival. One of the highlights for the day was Dylan Schmidt’s 38 not out, which was a wonderful feat for such a young played in those conditions. In the end the task was too much for the lads and they were bowled out for 112 in the 34th over. Once again, there were positives to come away from the match with and the team needs to avoid discouragement and strive to better their own game week by week and let the results improve from there.
