Duckpond Bill - 23rd October 2010
Saturday’s play saw the close of round two for the seniors and the first round of the junior grades.  Unfortunately only the A2’s were the only side able to bring home the points recording a strong victory over Angaston.
A1’s – The 1’s played a one day match at Stockwell main oval on the weekend as play was not able to commence last week.
The lads lost the toss and were sent into bat. The openers got the ball rolling with a fast 38 run opening stand before Dimi Camilleri was dismissed for 28, a quick wicket followed but at drinks the innings was showing promise with the score on 2/84.
After drinks Wade Gripton lost his wicket for 26 but the score was still climbing as Dick Mattner kept the runs flowing with a couple of partners.  The lads probably didn’t score as many as they would have liked in the final overs but the eventual total of 6/170 seemed defendable enough.  Dick’s undefeated 68 was the pick of the innings with cameos by Andy Davidson (13) and Sean Schrapel (15) helping out.
Angaston came out swinging in their innings and despite an early wicket the tactic paid off with the first wicket partnership yielding 90 runs and putting pressure on the young Light Pass bowlers.  Wade Gripton bowled well snaring 2/24 from his 8, but the other bowlers were simply not economical enough between wickets.  Bryce Mathews had his moments taking 2/26 and late wickets saw the lads almost bowl Angaston out but the damage had been done and the final score was 9/233.
As in the fist match there were positives in the match and these need to be concentrated on so the A1’s can build a successful side this season.  The Man of the match was Dick Mattner.

A2’s – The Wanderers also played Angaston and were defending a solid 230 run total after last weeks play.
The Bowlers had defiantly had their Weet Bix as they put Angaston under pressure from the first over when Andrew Nash dismissed one of the opposition’s most dangerous batsmen.  Nigel Koop was at his accurately annoying best from the other end and the pair almost kept Ango below one an over in the early parts of the match.  Koopy claimed a wicket when Marty Gallasch took a sharp chance in the slips and then promptly broke down with an injury that saw him take no further part in the days play finishing with figures of 1/11 from 8.  Nashy continued along his merry way taking another two wickets before drinks.
Angaston attempted to rally after the break but wickets to Chris Sims and Nashy soon had them on the back foot again.  Nashy claimed his fifth victim with the last ball of his spell tossing up the old “Ebby” delivery to earn his cheese glass in style, returning remarkable figures of 5/8 from15.  Matty Mattner then proceeded to bamboozle the tailenders as he and Keeper Ryan Schiller combined to take the last two wickets quickly, Matty took 2/1 from 2 and Ryan claimed 4 dismissals behind the stumps.
As Ango had not passed the follow on they were sent out to bat again and the boys in the baggy green went hunting for an outright.  There was several bowling changes made over the innings as the Baggies searched for wickets and all bowlers did well.  Matty returned figures of 2/10 from 8 in another good spell while, Tommy Gerlach, Tim Rowbottom, Dan Hausler and Paul Braunack all claimed a scalp each.  In the end Angaston just held on and the lads were denied the extra points.
The Man of the match was Andrew Nash.

A4’s – The A4’s played another surprisingly strong opposition in Kapunda this weekend at Stockwell No.2, in fact some of the lads are beginning to wonder when they will face a bona-fide A4 side this year.
Batting first the A4’s made 9/121 from their 40 overs, largely due to a great innings of 42 by Chris Allen who along with Skipper Brad Ellbourn (23)  put the side in a good position early in the innings.  Sadly the middle order couldn’t keep the ball rolling, but to be fair there were some fairly reasonable trundlers sending the ball down at the young Baggies line up.  When Chris was dismissed with the score on 90 it heralded the beginning of the end as the lads had to fight out the final overs as best they could.
The Baggie Greens bowlers did a great job of restricting the opposition but struggled to take wickets and in the end that was the difference as Kapunda passed the score in the final overs scoring 3/131 for the match.  Brad Hunter bowled well taking 1/21 from his 8 overs and it is well worth mentioning Jimmy Braunack’s 1/15 from 5 and Matt Kleemann’s 0/12 from 5 as the young Light Pass bowlers held their nerve defending a small total.
The man of the match was Bradley Hunter.
