A1's – The A1's played Angaston at Angaston on the weekend and batted first.
The top order made a cautious start but two quick wickets had them on the back foot early in the match. Wade Gripton worked hard for 21 before he was run out just after drinks making the score a precarious 4/48. The lush Ango oval made boundariess hard to find in the difficult conditions and despite good efforts by Matty Mattner (21) and Andy Davidson (18) there was never a partnership that could help post a good total and the lads were bowled out for 99 runs. With a low total to defend the bowlers were going to have to be on the ball and Brad Hunter gave the side a good start with a wicket in the first over. Scoring was tough for Angastons batsmen as well but it still took some time before Bryce Mathews broke through for the second wicket. Sam Schmidt (2/13) and Wade Gripton (2/32) took out Ango's middle order with out much fuss and it seemed an unlikely win could be on the cards with the score at 7/77 but typically for this season Angastons tail wagged and passed the total with 4 overs to go, eventually to be bowled out for 123. Brad Hunters 3/16 from 8 were the best figures for the day as the young bowler continues to impress. A2's – The Wanderer's were the good news story of the day for the club, posting a convincing win against Angaston at Stockwell. Bowling first the the openers were made to earn their wickets and it was the first changer's who reapt the rewards of tight spells by Syd Miller and Mick Baumann. Skipper Simon Davies claimed the first wicket and young leggy Chris Sims the second, but it was Andrew Nash's 4/27 that allowed the boys in the baggy green to get on top of Angaston. Some late hitting saw Ango post a reasonable total of 152 before Tim Rowbottom cleaned up the tail taking 2/12. With a couple of batsmen filling in in the 1's it was important that the top order performed and a 54 run opening stand between Paul Braunack and Tim Rowbottom was just what the doctor ordered. After Paul was dismissed Simon Davies joined Tim at the crease and once again a good partnership steered the side toward victory. Tim and Simon both made Angaston pay for missed oppertunities and when Simon was trapped LBW for 43 the team was only 7 runs short of claiming the points. Tim was runout late in the day for 53, his first half century of the year after an excellent innings that set up the win for the boys in the baggy green. Jeremy Gore and Adrian Hoffmann put the icing on the cake with a hard hitting 66 run partnership that pushed the final total to 4/243. Jeremy ended up making an entertaining 46, while Hoffy 32 not out and Nashy 18 not out finished the day off. Tim Rowbottom was man of the match. |
